Amhed Mitchel started playing drums at a very young age under the guidance and inspiration of his father, a great Cuban drummer himself. In his early 20's, Amhed was already playing and recording with and for such Cuban music legends as Cesar Lopez and Havana Ensemble ,the eight-time Grammy Award winner and recipient of multiple music doctorates, the great "Chucho" Valdes , Elmer Ferrer Band , Roberto Carcaces,.... just to mention a few.
As a session drummer, Mitchel has travelled extensively around the and has shared stage with such with musical icons like the great Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Dave Holland, Dianne Reeves and Leonel Lueke at the closing concert of the Tokyo Jazz Festival in 2004. Amhed relocated to Toronto, Canada in 2006 and his usual gigs include the multiple Juno Award winner and Doctorate from Queen's University Jane Bunnett, multiple Juno Award winner and grammy nominated Hilario Duran, the great Trombone player Dennis Rollins from England , The Elmer Ferrer Band, The Alexander Brown's Quintet, , John Findlay Band, Robb Cappelletto trio , Alexis Baro group, ... among many others.
Amhed Mitchel launched his second album titled ''Naciente'' on February 2017 both in Toronto at the Rex jazz club and Montreal at the Upstairs jazz club .
Amhed launched his first album "Path to Heaven" (Amhed Mitchel and the Breath of Life project) as part of the “Lula World” Festival in 2013. The CD features an impressive line-up of Toronto-based musicians including Juno Award winner Pat LaBarbera who has played with the Elvin John’s Band, Buddy Rich, Carlos Santana and many others.
